What do you prefer?

I am working on my second biography for the summer.  I found I really enjoy reading about people and their lives.  I enjoy reading nonfiction books.  I think my attraction to nonfiction books is my love of learning.  When I find something I'm interested in I want to learn more.

The other day as I was bird watching out the windows of our three seasons room, I spotted a hawk.  After researching the hawk in a nonfiction book, I learned it was a Cooper's Hawk.  I read Cooper's Hawks like to prey on small mammals.  This is why the chipmunks are disappearing from our yard.  I also learned if we removed our bird feeders for a few days the hawks will leave.

I am curious as to what type of book you prefer to read.

  1. When I was younger I loved to read fiction especially all things fantasy. As an adult I like non-fiction or even historical fiction. I am more interested in real life exceptional people or exceptional circumstances.

    1. It is interesting to see how our choices have changed. As a young adult my Mom shared her Danielle Steel books with me. My interest then turned to historical fiction and now nonfiction. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I love fiction. Always. The narrative pulls me along as I learn to love the characters, hoping everything turns out okay for them in the end. However, I find I need non-fiction breaks every couple of months. Nonfiction teaches me in a way I never learn from a novel. Right now, according to Goodreads, I am 64% complete with the biography I am reading now, and I just finished a great memoir last night, Everything Happens for a Reason and Other Lies I've Loved.

  3. I read EVERYTHING, but fiction is my favorite! I read historical fiction, contemporary fiction, chick lit, nonfiction, newspapers, mystery, thrillers. I hate when I get stuck on a book. And it's crazy that you saw a Cooper's Hawk- I just saw a hawk in the neighborhood, and after posting its picture to the neighborhood Facebook page and researching it online, I'm fairly certain it was a Cooper's!

  4. Last Spring we completed a three seasons room overlooking our backyard. We enjoy watching the wildlife we've never seen before adding this room. We have watched many varieties of birds including different woodpeckers, numerous deer, and too many small animals to list. I have learned so much about the animals and birds who are inhabiting our backyard.

  5. I love reading fiction. I grew up reading Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Twilight, etc. I also love anything by Roald Dahl like Matilda or James and the Giant Peach. As a kid/teen, I read so much but as I've gotten older I find to hard to get a chance to sit and read. If I do, I usually go back and read my childhood favorites.

    1. Maria, I too like to revisit books from my childhood and when my daughter was younger I loved sharing them with her.

  6. I tend to go for fiction more often than nonfiction because I love getting into stories. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy nonfiction, but there's something about a really great story that hooks me. As a second grade teacher, I have found that a significant number of my students prefer nonfiction books over fiction. I got a grant a few years ago and used it for buying books for my classroom library and probably 75% of the books I got were nonfiction, National Geographic books. There's something about being able to walk up to someone and start out with "Did you know...?" I love it!

    1. Avery,
I have found that most of my students are drawn toward nonfiction as well. I created a primary nonfiction section in our library-it is amazing to me how many students gravitate to those books. I also like to share companion books. The Mouse and Mole series by Yee is one of my favorite series for 1st graders. I will pair it with nonfiction about either mice or moles. This way the students have the best of both worlds.

  7. I love reading historical fiction. I love the fact that it takes me back in time. I love learning history. I get so involved in the books that when I stop, and think of the actual year I'm in.

  8. I have been drawn to historical books and prefer non-fiction reading on my free time. I'm a documentary filmmaker and always thinking of my next project. I like investigating and reading about conflicting stories. I get attached to characters, and its easier for me to connect with real people because usually, I can find multiple books about the same person.

  9. I enjoy both types, but I tend to lean towards fiction. I love realistic fiction in particular with a relatable character. The books that I enjoy the most have an impact on how I see the world and I learn something from the character and/or story.
